Post 49: Conclusion

To conclude this project i believe that the experience of creating a music video has fueld the want to vhoose this as a career path. I enjoyed composing all the research too the video and comeing up withe idea. I want thank my friends for their help. I feel that the process of the overall product was highly sucesfull. Thankyou

Post 48: Analysis

Question 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products

The scene that I shall be analysing is the first scene. This scene kicks off the video and is also where we have a POV shot looking at the lights. I feel that this challenges forms and conventions because most videos that you see on mainstream music video stations don’t start with pov shots looking at scenery. It’s sped up in order for there to be a pace that is set for the video. If it was slower I feel that this would of set a more mature mood for the video as slow conveys the sense of sadness where as the speed makes proceedings fun and bouncy. Shot in black and white, looks classy. Also with regards to the lighting i took influence from my favorite band Green days when i come around

The direct inspiration from this video is the scenes which involve the highstreet being sped up. It makes the pace feel fun and fast and then launches you into the next scen which is also in my video.

The next scene I’m analysing actually comes straight after the POV shot looking at the lights Graffiti Shot in a particular effect. This is just an establishinng shot and also serves a part as a pallet clenser and also its not typical for music videos too sudenly swich style. Especially in this case because its a random effect that happens once within the video

Scott is sitting by the wording that says I’m just a misfit. I like how the scenery sums up the scene. In most music videos with a story, the scenary doesnt usally convey the story or backstory of the video

The scene where our protagonist is standing there with the camera closing in, I feel ads a form of insight as it feels like we're getting closer to the character. This deviates from convention because music videos have a series of stationary shots to obtain the the characteristics of the protagonist.

The scene where the second robot is chasing the protagonsit up the hill deviates from convention because there commonly isn't this much cross country action happening in more mainstream videos with story. The only other video that really has this aspect is by the beastie boys and it's called sabotage

All the action conveyed in these videos are hand held meaning the accesability for freer shots can be made. Whilst my video doesnt have the same speed i feel that all the way through you have a menacng chase combined with a comic atmosphere as in both of these videos

The dropkick is in slow motion in order to obtain an epic fight scene simillar to martial arts movies. Also in regular motion this scene did'nt seem very strong and therefore didn't have the same impact as it does now. This scene deviates from convention because most music videos don't show violence before the watershed.

Whilst this scene isn't completely radical, i have opted for there to be shots of both the protagonist and the atagonists so that the audience can obtain some attachment towards the characters. I feel that i orriginally wanted this scene to be grander and more iconic with him standing there, however this proved to be unethical as i had a buisy filming schedule. I still feel that this shot is quite iconic though. In most music videos these establishing character shots are in the begingin however mine are intertwined throughout.

This is one of the more surreal scenes in the video. Using creative license to explain how sinister the hunt for the protagonist has become. Commonly in most music videos, the style wont usually switch from surreal to real however i have decided that for the video too not alienate the audience i incorporated both styles so you can feel comftable whilsts watching.

The last scene i shall be looking at is the scene where the robots run over our protagonist. Commonly in more mainstream music videos, they don't concern acts of death or violence. This scene pushes boundaries because the scene is unconventionally comical by the robots fisting eachother. The only other music video with this type of violence in is by fall out boy for the song sugar were going down. This video helped me decide how i should end my video

The end of this video helped me achgieve what i thought was going to be a difficult. The reason being is whilst i didnt want to run the protagonist over, i did want it to be dramatic. In the video the effectiveness of this scene comes from clever editing, in my video too i have edited it together so that you dont miss out on the story.

Question 2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts
I believe that the culmination of my main product and ancillary texts has created a vibrant and consistent project. The idea of the product was for it too encompass a D.I.Y (do it yourself) aesthetic, this means that my product has the rough and raw appearance. In order for my main product to not entirely alienate the audience I decided to incorporate this rough and edgy appearance into my ancillary texts. I drew the album art and everything within it. The art is meant too represent a kids drawing style displaying an adult issue. It is also meant to represent tongue and cheek humour. The project is not intended to be perceived as too serious. The album art is on the album advertisement; however the advertisement looks more professional in order to appeal to a broader audience.

The music video

Album art

The album advertisement

Question 3. What have you learned from your audience feedback
As of the conclusion, I have learnt that the audience found my product enjoyable and humorous. I didn't change the bideo due to feedback as i hadnt shown it to anyone until it was ready. In retrospect i wish that i had finished the video earlier in order to see if i could change it for the better. However the original concept of the video wasn’t just written with humour, it was meant to be darke and atmospheric and also there was less of a story. The audience found it was the main actor was the reasoning behind the comedy. They liked the charm in the awkwardness too which the actor provided unintentionally to my piece. They also enjoyed the surreal aspects of the robots and how towards the end they seemed more human. The audience also thought that the way all the scenes came together was effectively executed in the way that it told a strong, consistent and clear product. Along with all the ancillary tasks the audience felt that my end product was efficient and solid regarding what I had set out too do.

Below are some more thoughts that people had on my video

Question 4. How did you use new media technologies in pre construction and research planning and evaluation stages
I used Blogger in order to chart my progress throughout this project. Without it i wouldn't have been able to collect all my research. All the way through my project i have kept this blog updated, wether it's images, vvideos or just a paragraph to explain my progress. This blog has been uused as an online diary. I have updated it since the summer. I have updated this blog every month.

I used Youtube as a platform in order to search for music videos because without the platform i wouldnt have been able to obtain research for the dos and do nots of making music videos. I have used youtube all the way throughout the project. I have used it in order to research more videos.

I used Photoshop to edit my album cover, using varied effect to obtain my desired effect. I only used photoshop about four times just playing around with effects. I stumbled on the effect for my album cover by accident and decided it looked good

I used Fireworks to create the album advertisement. I used fireworks because it is a easier platform to compose advertisements, magazines ect. I used as opposed to photoshop because fireworks has the necesary tools to convey what i believe looks like a proffesional album advertisement. Its less linear than photoshop and i think its more practical. I only used towards the end of the project and i used it once

I used Windows movie maker to compose a rough idea for my music video. I didnt completely make a rough full lengh video in windows movie maker, in other words i used it in order to test how video editing programme worked so that it would give me a fair idea of what to epect when i worked in a more advanced setting of programe. I only used this programme in the planning stages in this project.

I used NCH video pad in order to compose and edit my video, using different effects concluded in me having what i believe to be a better project. Without the effects i wouldnt have been able to slow down, speed up or completely change the video. Also without the effects, the video would have been very mundaine and therefore i would not have been able to convey a surreal sensability and also i feel in that respect that people would not have been able to take the video seriously.

Question 5.Create an image board of all the new technologies you used

Post 47: Album advertisement

This my main album advertisement. Below is the design i have decided shall be distributed in music magazines. However allso in this post are previous ideas for the album advertisement. The basic premise is that the album is meant to replicate what is happening on the album cover, so effectively the album cover works as a plan for the album advertisement. This album advertisement was developed in Adobe fireworks.

The image itself i feel is quite strong as the shape of the actors is quite tight, therefore this makes a statement on the unity of the band. also you can see the conviction in there faces which pulls the act of effectively that their posing for a photo shoot and have taken it quite seriously.

I think the more sun drenched colours provide that earthy feel that i wanted

This was the original image with no editing. I changed it for the better as it did look quite amature, for it to be distributed in music magazines the quality needs to be higher.

I liked the use of green but i feel this almost completely submerged the picture in the thickness of the colour. I needed more clarity and higher definition

In this image i tried placing the cartoon robots with the actor, however i dont feel that the opposite spectrums really compliment eachother

Post 46: Other video cancelation

In the end it would appear that i ran out of time to film another video. However i did film some footage around croydon with the city lights. However this did not prove to be succesful as the lights did not pick up the lighting

Post 45: My album in its entirety

This is the original lyric booklet. The inside cover iss meant to be tonge and cheek this is achieved in the robot looking like a nun praying and then the rays of god are have shined upon the nun robot. Its in the same style as the front cover

This is the final colour pattern for the inside of the lyric booklet

This is the back cover. This is meant to replicate the child style of drawing, hence some sides are missing and there are scribbles on the back

This would be on the next part of the lyric booklet, these are the lyrics, it is purposely written in a scruffy way to convey an edgy and agressive manor simmilar to the terminator robot theme

This the cd. The red and the gold provide a grand tone to proceedings. The robot is purposely looking at you to obtain a conection with the viewer of the cd

Post 44: Album cover

This is what i have chosen for my album art
I created the design myself. As ooposed to using album art with real cast shot in a sepiear effect, i have decided too use the rough sketch. If i hadn't used the sketch then actors would have been placed in the same layout.

This was the original piece that i created in the summer

This was the finished product after experementing with photoshop

Why i like the album cover
I like it because it feels like it was drawn by a child (even the title). In my research some of the album art that i looked at had a simmilar theme of robots designed for a younger audience. However i think it provides two ends too the spectrum. On the one hand you have the cartoon apearence, but what is actually happening in the picture is quite menacing and has an adult theme which i feel provides a mature charm to proceedings.

Also i like how it looks like the drawing is on a scrap piece of paper with the edges cut off. I feel this provides a uniqe take on the aspect of drawing album covers.

Post 43: The video

This is the main product

I like how the finished product came out. My only concerns are a few continuity issues with regards to haircuts, different belts and the tucking in of the shirt but apart from that i am pleased with the product i have

Post 42: Storyboards

I finally added my storyboards

Changes
Scott no longer goes to a trainstation
Scott no longer wears an over coat

Changes
There are no overshoulder shots. They were cut out due to continuity and time concern

Changes
Scott no longer rolls down a hill.

Changes
There is nolonger a third robot
It is not in a multistory car park
It's shot during the day
The mise en sceine of the car is much more a tool now
Didnt film the iconic scene where scott is surrounded and the lights go out

Overall changes
There were now two robots as opposed too 1
The product became more comic than originally intended

These were actually completed some time ago before filming.
The anitial idea of him being the back of the car changed as is seen in the storyboars. Orriginally my music video was just meant to be a scenic video with iconic imagery but as time went on i transformed it into a more comic terminator kind of video. I think that this will have more appeal.

Post 41: Album advertisements

This post is to research album advertisements so i can obtain ideas for my album advertisement.

This advertisement is for Blink 182

I like the simplicity and strtucture. The fact that the band are the main focus of t advertisement. Simple yet effective publishing
However i feel that maybe that the colours (dry brown) provides a warn effect, however the contrast of the colours on the album draw your eyes to that as an imediate focus

These advertisements are for green day

I shall mainly focus on the first advertisement as it is too do with the album. I like the artistic license. The record itself has a political theme, therefore by adding the imagery it provides the characteristics to the what the album will be like. I also like the use of colours, they provide a classy sepier effect almost like the picture was portrayed on a brown paper bag, which i feel is a cool effect

This advertisement is for daft punk

This advertisement coincides with the release of a walt disney movie. Tron. The reason i like this is because that it isn't only promoteing daft punk but promoteing the film. I like the futuristic and dark vibe. Its simple yet effective and i feel that in this case less really is more.

This advertisement is for U2

This is an example of cross media convergance. They aren't promoting an album but a product (the blackberry), distributors use established household names to shift units. I like the imagery and the red vortex/ arena. It provides an epic out of this world vibe

Post 39: Random videos of progress

These are just a random assaurtment of videos to monitor my progression

Post 38: Finished filming, nearly

Yesterday on Sunday 10th I wrapped up filming for my video of Robots 1 humans 0. The only piece of footage i have left is to capture the protagonist disapearing as a train passes but appart from that I am done. I also managed to take some photos of the band posing. The band were all characters within the video. The pictures shall be the content of the album advertisment in a musical magazine. I obtained alot of positive feedback about my demo album art with one person actually claiming that i should use it. Acting upon this feedback i have decided to retain the artwork that i created.

The next part of the project is getting the other video finished.

Post 37: Whats happening tomorrow

On Sunday the 10th of April I am aiming to conblude filming my music video for robots 1 humans 0. However at the last moment i have had to change the ending and final act to my video. Due to an unforseign event happening with one of the actors i have had to change the ending to there being just two robot's. Hopefully i should be able to create a new concept in time for tomorrow.

In the meantime, expect more videos, album art, storyboards and album advertisement. Ive got a new and faster computer now that should hopefully upload everything and anything.

Post 36: pictures

These are some more shots of another place in Epsom. This place was originally planned as the alternative to Epsom ruins. I was going to use this place because it's full of graffiti and looks quite grim

This picture was taken in Little Hampton and was taken in September. I originaly went to little Hampton in order to obtain shots for my album advertisement. I also shot the opening sequance of my video their.

This is shot taken for the rave band the prodigy. I really liked the grim atmosphere on the bridge. I also wanted to know if there was a local area that was similar to the area in the picture. I want a picture like this for the album advertisement.

This is the closest area that i could find. This is at littlehampton. It's a little too friendly for the image I was trying to convey. However i do like this image

These shots were takenon the hill were Ben chases scott

Post 35: Extra video

In order to obtain more marks i have decided to create another video. This video will be for a song thats by my band however this track is inly preformed acoustically by one of our members. It will just be a preformance video shot from different angles. It may also include some blury images of sceanry. The influences and inspirations for this video have come from....

The offspring

Likes
The simplicity of the video
The multiple camera angles provide a fun and energetic effect
The video has a D.I.Y

dISLIKES
The camera may be a bit to jumpy and may cause illness because the speed of the angles

City and Colour

Likes
The scenary
The simplicity
The undercurrent of a storyline

Dislikes
Nothing

I hope to record this video as soon as possible

Also my laptop died so now i'm trying very hard to hand in the the coursework incorporasting the ancillary tasks. All my files of storyboards and mock album design may have been lost.

However im completing filming this Sunday in order to get this video completed

Post 34: Videos

This is some of the demo footage i shot at Epsom ruins

The first shot i intend to put at the begining. This scene isnt action filled but i want to get the sense that we find the protaganist alone and disinfranchised.

This is the same shot just filmed in colour and from a different angle. I do like this angle but i dont feel that I shall have enough time to place it into the video.

This shot is also used to emphasise the loneliness the protagonist faces

A simillar shot. I like how the light shines on hime amongst the dark. It provides a biblical "god's hand aproach", or that theres light at the end of the tunnel

There shall be more videos later.

Post 33: What happened sunday

On Sunday we spent i spent the day attempting to finish of all the filming for my video.

However i wasnt able to obtain the desired affect. I finished of the squence of the hill chase. I also attempted the final act which included a chase in a car scene. As aposed to now finishing the the video with a lightsout sequence in the car park, Scott is hunted down and ran ove by the robot's. This unfortuanately didnt go to plan. Whilst I recorded majority of the footage i wanted, i felt that i didnt really have a plan of action so this Sunday im going to conclude filming. I will use the footage just as demo footage. Feeling defeated i decided to halt filming for that day. I also need to film linking scenes in order for the video to actually make sense. This will be done in the next few weeks.

As usual im still working out how to upload storyboards, mock album art and mock advertisement.

Untill then these are some of 2 out of the 5 cast pictures

This is Scott. He is the protagonist

This is Ian. 1 of the antagonists

There will be more images soon

Post 32: Whats happening Sunday

I have made a lot of progress with regards to finishing my music video. I need to finish the 3rd part which shall involve all the cast. I have set up youtube acount's and yet have forgotten how to get into them. I have done story boards, rough versions of album cover design and advertisement design however my scanner corrupted files so now were having a bit of trouble.

The plan for Sunday is to finish the music video. It shall include all four of the cast. Then i can hopefully edit and compose a strong music video.

Post 30: Whats happening part 2

Storyboards, album cover and advertisement should be up fairly soon. Having a few problems with scaning the images and putting them on the blogg. Did some filming featuring the second act of the film. It went well and i feel that the production is shaping up the way i had intended.

Just some background information. The camera im using is an aiptek hd 720p 1280x720 and the effect im using on it is monochrome, also the video resolution is wvga 60f DVD which gives the production a warmer more fluid image.I am using it to shoot both pictures and film

Post 29: Lyrics

These are the lyrics for the song i will be using. Its useful to obtain the lyrics to decide whether the themes in the lyrics should be replicated in the video.

So what have we really learned today
that some things are easier when we walk away
and acting normal means acting like everyone eles
and you're better of by not acting like yourself

are we buy what they're selling
do we have our eyes open
life's not a fashion statement
it takes more than good intentions

It's just prefect day in our perfect lives
just as long as we have commericals and things to hide behind
it's a life so real you only watch it
on a moive screen getting so close you can almost touch it

are we buy what they're selling
do we have our eyes open
life's not a fashion statement
it takes more than good intentions
[x2]

they never bought or sold you
they can't image and mold you
to chase something cause we think its new
thinking thats the best for you

are we buy what they're selling
do we have our eyes open
life's not a fashion statement
it takes more than good intentions
[x2]

Lyrics from
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/lessthanjake/robotsonehumanszero.html

The message that i hopeto convey is that machines have overtaken humans in the line of work, this therefore making humans obsolete in there tasks that they carry out.

Post 27: More images

These are some more scenary shots. The images are from september
This is of the first actual location ive been shooting in and its located outside Epsom.

These are just outside shots of the area to locate scenes in the video and to also obtain spacial awareness

This part of the location will be specifcally used in the hiding scene. We will see the main actor hiding behind the wall with the robot walking past and looking around

These shots were taken to get a feeling for the interior of the building
